I’ve changed straps on my watches more times than I can count. Leather, rubber, bracelets straps, I’ve tried most of them. But sailcloth has always been one of my favorite options for sports watches because it sits somewhere between rugged and refined.
That’s what originally made me interested in Artem Sailcloth Watch Straps.
Artem Straps has become well known among watch enthusiasts for its sailcloth straps, and after wearing one, I can see why. It doesn’t feel like an inexpensive fabric strap dressed up to look premium. The construction, texture, hardware, and overall fit feel properly considered.
More importantly, it looks right on the kind of watches I actually enjoy wearing.
It Looks Like Sailcloth Without Being Fabric
The first thing that stood out to me was the texture.
Artem uses a fine, low-sheen sailcloth pattern inspired by the tight grid weave of yacht sailcloth. It gives the surface plenty of visual character without creating unnecessary shine that competes with the watch.
The important thing to understand is that it isn’t actually woven sailcloth.
The pattern is embossed into a synthetic upper material. Underneath that is a leather structural layer and a natural rubber underside.
I actually prefer this approach.
Real fabric can fray, absorb moisture, and become stiff over time. Artem gives me the visual character I wanted from sailcloth while using a construction better suited to a proper watch strap.
On the wrist, the texture looks especially good alongside divers, chronographs, GMTs, and everyday sports watches.
There’s a Proper Break-In Period
One thing I noticed immediately is that Artem’s Standard Sailcloth isn’t designed to feel ultra-soft straight out of the package.
It has structure.
Initially, the strap feels firm and maintains that padded, substantial profile that reminds me of a good OEM dive strap. Over the first week or two, however, it gradually starts molding around the wrist.
I enjoyed that process because the strap becomes more comfortable without losing its shape.
There’s a big difference between a strap breaking in and one simply breaking down. With Artem, it feels like the former.
Once mine had settled around my wrist, I found the balance between structure and comfort particularly good. It still looked substantial enough for a larger sports watch but didn’t feel unnecessarily bulky.
Classic Is Simple and Familiar
The Classic Standard Sailcloth configuration is probably the easiest recommendation for most people.
It uses the traditional two-piece arrangement with a tang buckle, keeper loops, and the strap tail sitting outside.
There’s nothing complicated about it.

Put the watch on, select the adjustment hole that feels right, pass the strap through the keepers, and you’re ready to go.
The buckle is included, with steel or black options available, which makes matching the hardware to your watch straightforward.
I also really appreciate the fitted quick-release spring bars. I swap straps frequently, and not having to reach for a spring-bar tool every time makes changing the personality of a watch much easier.
Loop-less™ Gives Sailcloth a Completely Different Look
For anyone who wants something cleaner, Artem also offers its Standard Sailcloth construction in a Loop-less™ configuration.
This is probably my favorite setup aesthetically.
Instead of using a conventional tang buckle and external keeper loops, Loop-less™ is designed around a deployant clasp. Once I’ve adjusted the clasp to my wrist, the strap opens and closes more like a bracelet.
The excess strap sits underneath the clasp rather than extending outside.
That sounds like a small change, but visually it makes a substantial difference.
There’s no loose tail and no unnecessary bulk under a shirt cuff. Because the strap remains flatter during fastening, there’s also less repeated bending around the adjustment holes.
The Loop-less™ Deployant Clasp is sold separately and is available in steel or black DLC. Compatible OEM Omega deployant clasps can also be used when the clasp-end width matches.
If convenience and traditional styling are priorities, I’d choose Classic.
If I wanted the cleanest possible appearance, Loop-less™ would get my vote.
The Color Choices Make It Easy to Experiment
One of the most enjoyable parts of buying an Artem Sailcloth strap is deciding which color belongs on your watch.
The collection includes black, blue, brown, burgundy, gray, green, orange, red, white, and beige, with matching and contrasting stitching options.

Black with black stitching is probably the most versatile combination. It works with almost anything and lets the watch remain the focus.
Blue with contrasting white stitching creates a noticeably sportier appearance, while beige or khaki tones can make a serious dive watch feel much more relaxed.
My rule is simple: look at your dial, bezel, or hands and find a color worth picking up.
When the strap connects with an existing detail on the watch, the entire combination looks much more intentional.
Sizing Is Excellent
Another detail I appreciate is the range of available sizes.
Depending on the configuration, Artem Sailcloth straps cover 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, and 23mm lug widths.
That’s important because not every interesting watch uses the usual 20mm or 22mm size.
For Loop-less™, you’ll see measurements such as 20/18mm. The first number represents the watch’s lug width, while the second represents the clasp width. Your deployant clasp needs to match that second measurement.
Water Resistance and Everyday Wear
Standard Sailcloth is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.
For me, that distinction matters.
Sweat, rain, and occasional splashes are fine, but because the strap contains a leather structural layer, I wouldn’t intentionally soak it or wear it swimming.
For normal everyday use, though, I’ve found that perfectly reasonable.
Would I Recommend Artem Sailcloth?
Absolutely.
What I like most is that Artem hasn’t simply reproduced the appearance of sailcloth. The brand has turned that aesthetic into a structured, comfortable watch strap that feels appropriate beside a premium timepiece.
You also get quick-release spring bars, broad sizing, plenty of colors, Classic and Loop-less™ configurations, a two-year craftsmanship warranty, and a 30-day fit and feel guarantee.
For me, the appeal ultimately comes back to how the strap makes my watch feel.
It’s sporty without looking cheap, textured without becoming distracting, and distinctive without overpowering the watch.
If you own a diver, chronograph, GMT, or everyday sports watch and want to give it a completely different personality, Artem Sailcloth is a strap I’d happily recommend.
Choose your size, decide between Classic and Loop-less™, find a color that complements your watch, and put it on your wrist.
You’ll quickly understand why sailcloth is the strap that made Artem’s name.
